In performing a research, you need to gather information on various sources of data onto a specific study in order to achieve a systematic and reasonable argument. There are two types of research method that can be applied for performing this task. These are: qualitative and quantititative approach. As a research approach, they differ from each other and have its own advantage that grants you the best possible examination on every topic of interest and formulate its conclusion in an effective way. I would like to discuss factors about the distinction of these research methods in the following paragraphs. The basic objective of a qualitative research is to bring comprehensive and accurate information of a specific study. This means that a researcher is concern in sustaining a deeper and richer comprehension and interpretation of an individual’s motivation and behavior. This approach is generally subjective on the study to be examined. In contrast with quantitative, the focal point of concern is to create and apply mathematical or statistical description or hypothesis of a specific event or occurrence. This approach leads to stay objectively in a manner that it looks for accurate measurement and examination of the course of study in response of the research questions. Regarding on how data collected, these two research methods are distinct from each other. Qualitative research collects information on the form of non-mathematical such as words, images and objects. Primary and secondary sources are where we can gather valuable information to support an argument on a particular subject which can be obtain from a range of methods in collecting a data. These sources includes narrative interviews where the researcher ask questions with an individual, observation either directly present or an active participant in the field of study or focus groups where there is discussion of a group of people about their views and insight on a certain topic .Other related sources are documentation, archival records and artifacts. On the other hand, the data gathered in quantitative involves statistical examination to enhance data numerically that can be applied to examine and the relationship of variables. The information is collected by numerous ways to conform a concrete procedure and arranged for mathematical analysis. This examination provides an individual to find out to what degree is a connection with two or more variables. The data can be obtained from a larger group of people by asking a list of questions as in a survey or questionnaires. In most cases, research questions on qualitative are open-ended. This means that you would provide to reply a question on your own understanding and viewpoint on the concept. This is the one that makes it different from the quantitative because of the absence of numerical significance required for a precise research. Originated from the word ‘ethno’, it signifies race or culture. This can also be a case study. However, it involves specifically the analysis of customs and culture of an individual or organization from a particular society or place in which the researcher has an active part on the study. It means that he is sharing his experience and participating in the activity on day-to-day where the study is acquired. Historical Research. From the root word ‘history’, it clearly indicates past events to be examined on the basis of information at hand. It often searches to find ‘how’ or ‘why’ things happened on the past and establish these events in connection to the current or in future times. Though both primary and secondary sources provide significant information, it will be better to use primary source if available because it is more detailed and accurate. All these qualitative research methods explore comprehensive background information and its argument thoroughly where the type of questions cannot be recognized in quantitative. For example, a researcher conducts a clinical study to develop a new technology for surgical procedure. The analysis to be made in this study involves in-depth reasoning, encouragement for individual behavior or how they react on a certain situation and other related human interactions. The conclusion accomplished a theory of how combined knowledge within a group of individuals affects the achievement of using this new technology in which they have no mathematical sense to be applied for quantitative research. Further, the fact that the research questions are mostly open-ended such as ‘why’ and ‘how’, these type of questions cannot be applied for quantitative research. In summary, I would say that qualitative examines the data collected into theory while quantitative examines the theory into data. It is only vital to acknowledge the distinction of applying to these two approaches when conducting a research. This knowledge can guide a researcher to select the suitable approach from a certain study to be performed properly.
